Session: Projection Design using QLab & Digital Painting

Using examples from our past several shows, this session walks attendees through our process to create custom projection designs using digital painting (Adobe Fresco) and programming them in QLab. This is suitable for entry level technicians and designers who are interested in projection design through experienced designers who are interested in comparing processes.

Jonathan Robert Bucci is the Director of Production at Grove City College. He received his BFA from Point Park University in 2014 and has worked in the Pittsburgh region his entire life. He spent nearly a decade working at Integrated Theater Systems, Ltd. and StoweNash Associates designing venues, their systems, and consulting with artists about how to get the most out of their tools. He spent several years running Jonathan Bucci Productions alongside his work at ITS/SNA and then eventually full time. He has been working with Grove City College for three years, where he mentors students in Lighting, Audio, Projections, Stage Management, 3D Printing/Design, and Broadcast. Jonathan has worked to build up a projections program at Grove City College and has implemented projections on five mainstage shows in the past three years.

Greta Paulding is currently a Junior at Grove City College who is majoring in Marketing. A skill digital artist, Greta was the assistant designer/digital painter for Fiddler on the Roof in Fall 2024. She was the Projections Designer & Digital painter for Honk! In spring of 2025 and The Wind in the Willows which is running Nov 5-8, 2025. Greta has been an instrumental part of implementing digital painting into Grove City College's projections designs. She has worked with Jonathan on both design and workflow for this process. She is also a talented graphic designer and photographer who work with both on and off campus clients.
