Portfolio: Everyone needs a portfolio.  What?!? Yes, everyone needs a portfolio. What is a portfolio? How do I put one together?  Why do I need one?  Is it going to cost me a lot of money?  All these questions will be answered addressing how to create a portfolio for college entrance, summer job, life after college, etc.  A variety of options will be discussed ranging from very low cost to higher cost.

A more hands on, advanced discussion of portfolio creation.  Bring your portfolio supplies, laptop, etc  How do I put a professional portfolio together? Who is the audience for my work? All these questions will be addressed while discussing portfolios for graduate school interviews, summer jobs, and for getting that first job out of college.  Low cost and high cost options will be discussed.

Creating puppets out of paper offers a low cost option for puppetry work, but also a look at the formation of two dimensional drawings/shapes and how they transform into three dimensional shapes.  In addition, there are several artistic variations on what can be done with these puppets, how how to manipulate therm.  Space is limited as several patterns will be passed out to be put together.

Educating Student Designers about Copyright, Public Use, Creative Comment Content for use in their work.  Providing Educators with a framework to work with their University Libraries providing resources for Content   We have worked closely with our University Librarian creating websites and resource banks for student designers.  Each semester, Monica visits the classroom and we have lessons regarding laws of public use and resources for content.  This has been extremely helpful for design, but also for students writing research papers for class.

Moving Beyond the Facade Wall: Using Script Analysis and Directing Concepts within the Scene Designer’s Process

This session focuses script analysis methods to encourage creative performance design solutions and facilitate collaborative discussions with directors and other designers. In some cases, introductory design textbooks introduce script analysis to emerging designers through scenographic representation (such as the given circumstances: time, place, economics, etc.), design principles (color, design harmony, unity, etc.), historical research and production metaphors.  As an extension of these important script analysis tools, this presentation considers how introductory methods in directing and acting can benefit an emerging designer’s process. This hands-on session will use the presentation room as a creative sandbox exploring concepts in balance, levels, boundaries, tension, pathways and character objective analysis. This session serves as an introduction these concepts for high school and 1st/2nd year undergraduate students interested in scenic or lighting design (particularly those who have not had an opportunity to take directing or script analysis courses).

International Learning Opportunities with Professional Organizations

This session focuses on the various learning opportunities for university students, educators and industry professionals through international professional organizations.  The International Organization of Scenographers, Theatre Architects and Technicians (OISTAT) is a network of over 30 national design associations across the globe. The organization has commissions focusing on Performance Design, Technology, Architecture, Publication & Communication, Education and Research. OISTAT hosts several symposiums, events and conferences each year. Every four years, OISTAT members organize World Stage Design—– an international design festival containing a public design exhibition, symposiums, masterclasses and international performances.   Beyond OISTAT, additional information will be shared about the upcoming 2019 Prague Quadrennial and other upcoming international events focused on performance design and technology. As an extension of the sessions topic, there will be a conversation about how to participate in future events, how to find student funding opportunities and various ways to connect with international theatre organizations.
